Sermon on the Mount, The

By C. R. Stam

It appears that in certain areas the New Evangelicalism has brought us around again to the old time Modernism. Like the Modernists of fifty to a hundred years ago, many church leaders today keep hammering away at the Sermon on the Mount and the gospel of the kingdom because these have so much to say about peace, non-resistance, social justice, sharing the wealth, etc. This they call "the social gospel."

We cannot, and do not, question that the Sermon on the Mount contains the very words of the Lord Jesus Christ, and that they were all binding at that time, but we hold that later our Lord, from His glory in heaven, suspended that program until a future day, raising up Paul, the chief of sinners saved by grace, to usher in a new dispensation, specifically named, "the dispensation of the grace of God" (Eph. 3:1-3), and that to him was committed "the gospel of the grace of God" (Acts 20:24), the gospel which we are to proclaim today.

Sir Winston Churchill is reported to have said on one occasion: "What a happy world this would be if we all lived according to the Sermon on the Mount!" But it has been historically demonstrated that, due to the depravity of human nature, man can no more practice the Sermon on the Mount consistently than he can consistently obey the Ten Commandments. Nor will he be able so to live until the Holy Spirit takes control and causes him to do so (See Ezek. 36:27,28).
