Every time we see a truck hauling products on the highway, we should be reminded of an important spiritual truth. Each rig, when loaded, contains tons of cargo. Once in a state of movement, it is a powerful force being propelled down the road. But, as big as a truck is, and as much weight as it carries, it is powered by one relatively small thing: a battery. Without this, the truck is virtually useless and isn’t going very far. In the spiritual realm, our battery that supplies us with the power to go forward in victory every day is the written Word of God, applied to a willing heart, through the ministry of the indwelling Holy Spirit.
In Psalm 19, David describes the Scriptures in a number of ways. He wrote: “the law of the Lord is perfect” (verse 7a). David realized God’s Word is without blemish, spot, or flaw. Therefore, it has the power to work in sinners to produce a “converting [of] the soul” (verse 7). “The testimony of the Lord is sure (certain and true), making wise the simple” (verse 7b). Better than experience or humanistic education, God’s Word produces a godly wisdom even to souls with more limited capabilities. David knew: “the statutes of the Lord are right (correct in everything they say, therefore, in a receptive believer, they produce a) rejoicing of the heart, (an) enlightening [meaning to give life] to the eyes” (verse 8). Many times we have seen the light of understanding and joy come on when a believer begins to comprehend great truths from God’s Word. It is caused by a deep sense of joy and fulfillment. David continues by saying, “…the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether” (verse 9). Men may scoff in disbelief at the Scriptures, but they are indeed eternal truth and always right. For David, God’s Word was “more to be desired…than gold…sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb” (verse 10). He allowed his soul to hanker for time in the Scripture because he valued it so highly.
We need the daily “washing of water by the Word” (Ephesians 5:26) to cleanse our thinking. Time in God’s Word, applying it to our lives, is the only way to be “transformed” (Romans 12:2) into a better “image of [God’s] Son” (Romans 8:29). May we remember today, and share with another believer, that the source of our power is reading the Scriptures daily.
